Gutters take a beating in Austin — between the heavy spring storms, summer heat, and debris from our live oaks and cedar elms, even well-installed gutters need occasional attention. Here are the most common gutter problems we see across Austin and when it's time to pick up the phone.
1. Gutters Pulling Away from the Fascia
This is one of the most common issues we see. When gutters pull away from the fascia board, it's usually because the hangers have worked loose, the fascia has rotted, or the gutters have become too heavy from debris buildup. Left alone, a separated gutter can cause water to pour directly behind the gutter and into your wall. This needs professional attention.
2. Leaking Joints and End Caps
Even seamless gutters have joints at corners and end caps that can develop leaks over time as sealant ages. Small leaks can often be resealed, but if the gutter material itself has corroded or cracked, that section may need replacement.
3. Gutters Overflowing During Rain
If your gutters are overflowing during a rain that isn't exceptionally heavy, the most common culprits are clogs, undersized gutters, or improper slope. Austin's clay soil makes overflow especially damaging — water pooling at the foundation can cause serious structural issues over time.
4. Sagging or Uneven Gutters
Gutters should slope gently toward the downspout — about a quarter inch for every 10 feet. If your gutters are sagging or have low spots, water pools instead of draining, leading to rust, leaks, and eventual failure. Rehinging and repiching the gutter usually fixes this.
5. Downspout Not Draining Properly
A clogged or improperly positioned downspout is often the source of overflow problems. Downspouts should extend at least 4–6 feet away from your foundation, and extensions or underground drainage can help in areas with poor drainage.
When to Repair vs. Replace
Minor issues — loose hangers, small leaks, clogged downspouts — are usually worth repairing. But if your gutters are more than 15–20 years old, heavily corroded, or have multiple problem areas, a full seamless replacement is often more cost-effective in the long run.
